Tens of thousands of people descended on Newcastle in glorious sunshine last weekend like pins drawn by a magnet. What is the center of attraction? CARS. Some of the World’s most expensive cars have graced the city’s streets because of inaugural NE1 Newcastle Motor Show. Most of these cars worth some millions of pounds.
The inaugural NE1 Newcastle Motor Show saw the city’s Grey Street and Grey’s Monument become temporary parking spaces for Rolls Royces, Lamborghinis and Ferraris.Across Saturday and Sunday more than 100 went on display including a Red Bull Formula One car and, after its launch on June 24, only the second public outing of the Aston Martin DB9 GT.
The event displayed show-stopping vehicles from dealerships and private owners and range from the latest in sleek technology to classic cars.
Stephen Patterson, director of communications at NE1 said yesterday: “I think it’s really caught the imagination of the people in the North East as you can see by the large crowds we have experienced.
“I think we had in the region of about 60,000 people through the event yesterday.
Mr Patterson said the line up had been slightly different for day two with some people only able to show Saturday or Sunday.
This variation had proved welcome as many people came out to see the cars on both days, he added.
“The range of cars has been breathtaking. A 1920 Rolls Royce all the way through to a beautiful white Lamborghini Roadster,” he continued.
“We have got everything between your top end super cars to your mint edition classics.
“The total value of cars over the weekend has been about £8/£9million.”
Among those checking out the displays was Jill Adamson, a teacher from Durham, and her sons Charlie, six, and Ollie, four.
She said: “We have been to the cinema and we just thought we would have a wander round. They are really good.”
As the event concluded at 4pm each day, there was a grand departure which saw Grey Street reverberate to the sound of engines revving before the cars left one-by-one.
Mr Patterson said: “I think we will definitely be doing it again next year. The response from the general public has been just astounding.”
