EARTHQUAKE AND CHILDREN- Ten Steps To Survival

Most people who get caught in a earthquake panic and go where they aren't not supposed to. Read this guide to find out what you should do.

• Don't panic.

 The worst thing you can do is panic because you have a higher chance of dying or getting injured

• Duck and cover.

 If you don't get told to do this, do it anyway. It is better to be safe than sorry.

• Avoid earthquake faults.

 Do not fall in.

• Know where to go.

 If at school, go under your desk (no matter what, unless an earthquake fault appears, which will most likely not happen, but it still could. Don't go in the doorway. That's the teacher's/parent's place, and it is unsafe because your fingers could get jammed you could get hit by objects, or anything!) Go under something. Don't try for the triangle of life; it's a myth and could get you killed.

•  Follow your teacher or your school's emergency plan if you are at school 

. Do what you're told.

•  Get out!

 Before doing this, wait about 10 minutes. If it was quite big (over magnitude 6.0), there will be aftershocks. Don't go until clear.
  

• Assemble.

 If at home, find your parents and go to a safe meeting point. If at school, go to your school's meeting point, and wait for the teachers and parents.
  

• Listen to the radio.

 If there has been a major earthquake (like the 2011 Japan one), listen to the radio for tsunami warnings. If there are any, get to high ground.
  

• Wait.

 If you get trapped, you need to be careful. Try to get help soon. There will be aftershocks and people will try to find you.
  

• Check for signs.

 An earthquake can mean a lot of things and also cause a lot of side effects. An earthquake can be the sign of a volcanic eruption so if you get any warnings, evacuate. An earthquake can also cause a tsunami which is much worse. They also mean the earth is moving and your town or city or country may have moved! There will most likely be aftershocks.
